Monthly Newsletters

June Newsletter

Hello everyone!  We had a lovely trip to the M&S Archive in Leeds last month and we must thank Enid Pyrah for organising it so well.  Sadly, she was not in control of the weather and so we were unable to explore the delights of Roundhay Park.

This month the branch meeting has a slightly different format as we welcome Priscilla Jones who will lead a workshop to make textile and wire sculptures (see picture).   The workshop is almost fully booked but I understand that one place is still available.  Please email or phone Clare Hutchinson or myself to book a place.  The meeting room might be a bit chaotic but we will do our best to make sure that there is space for those who want to work on their own projects.  By way of explanation, the committee decided to try this format when we had fewer members and we were struggling to fill places on weekend workshops.  I would welcome feedback from both participants and those working on their own projects.

Things to bring to the meeting
·         Travelling books – the penultimate swap!
·         Continuous wall pictures which were made for Yarndale 2015.  We have been asked to lend them to Pauline Heywood for display at the British Wool Show which takes place 8-9th July at Thirsk Rural Business Centre.

Yet more creative challenges
Just a reminder about some other calls for entries.  You might find that some of your current work fits the themes or perhaps you could use some samples that you have made and not used.

  • Inchies – Sue Ingles would like all members to make at least one 3cm square using any style or technique.  These will be patchworked together by Sue to make a cover for the Skipton Branch book.  Deadline July meeting.
  • YH Region Chairman’s Challenge – a piece that could be reproduced as a card for use by the Region.  Deadline 7th October 2017
  • Name badges – Jill has given me some blank plastic holders so if you would like to make a name badge……….

·         Our Capability Brown wall hanging can be seen at Farfield Mill, Sedbergh from 17th June – 30th July
·         British Wool Show at Thirsk Rural Business Centre 8-9th July.

Travelling Books:
Swap your books on the bus or by some other means if you are not able to come on the outing.

Special request:
Does anyone have a wax pot (used for Batik) that they would be prepared to loan for the June workshop? Please let either Clare Hutchinson or myself know if you have one.

Continuous Wall:
In 2015, Sue Sissling asked members to make a small piece of art based on the theme of a continuous dry- stone wall for display at Yarndale. The Regional Guild would like to borrow these for display at the British Wool Show which takes place in Thirsk on 8/9
th July 2017. Please bring them to the June meeting.
Forthcoming meeting Monday 19th June: Workshop with Priscilla Jones mixed media wire sculpture
The June meeting is slightly different and was planned at a time when we were struggling to achieve good attendance for both workshops and regular meetings. How times have changed! The workshop will take place in our usual meeting room and we will make sure there is sufficient space for everyone else to work on their own projects but we might have to relocate into the area at the back of the church. Please be patient! This format is an experiment and I would welcome your feedback. The course is now fully booked with a reserve list. If you have booked and are unable to make it, please let either me or Clare Hutchinson know in good time so that we can reallocate your place.

Great Idea Claire, to start up a blog - especially for those of us not always able to attend meetings. Many thanks for your hard work.
