100 HEARTS EXHIBITIONS

“Lest we Forget” are the poignant words spoken by a generation long ago.  Those who fought in World War 1 are now fading memories to the generation who came after, and soon they too will be lost to us.  Stories of comradeship, bravery, victories and setbacks were captured in the letters sent back to relatives eagerly waiting for news or told by those who returned.  In conjunction with SSAFA, the Embroiderers’ Guild is proud to be part of the commemoration of all those who took part in World War 1.  Using cloth and thread as both a medium and metaphor, textile artists will interpret the stories as unique and sensitive images stitched onto hearts.  The pieces will illustrate to a new generation the men and the animals that accompanied them; the uniforms worn and medals won; the regiments that fought together and the family members fondly remembered; the songs that kept their spirits high and the words they wrote to those back home.  These will be unique and thoughtful exhibitions put together to fulfil the hope of a generation not to be forgotten.

Branch round up

Before our talk by Hayley Mills-Styles I did a quick round up of what members have been up to. Here's a small sample - there are pieces produced on courses, at the Summer School and personal work.

Thread Artist - Hayley Mills-Styles

We had a fabulous talk today by Hayley Mills-Styles who uses stitch and textiles to tell stories about her life. Hayley experiments with traditional techniques, digital embroidery and sculptural elements inspired by objects and places which remind her of childhood, family and events.

Hayley has exhibited in some interesting spaces such as caravans and crumbling Sunnybank Mills. Her work is very personal and explores important moments in her life - not all happy, but which resonate with people. We all appreciated her openness and honesty about emotions and events which we may not usually choose to share so publicly, but it was refreshing and presented in a very entertaining way! And the embroidery was absolutely beautiful, and of very unusual things such as body parts and xrays!

Recently Hayley has explored the collection at Whitby Museum, one of her favourite places, and became fascinated with Narwhals - we had a sneaky peek at a little of what's coming up in her new exhibition. Her latest work will be exhibited at Whitby Museum from September 15th and will be well worth a visit.
