Came across a Blog today that looks really interesting, worth a browse through their posts - it's the Textile Experimental Group from East Ayton, Scarborough. They also have an exhibition coming up if you're over that way at some point. You can access their Blog hereor there's a permanent link in the drop down menu.

EG Members' Challenge 2017

If you are thinking of participating in the Embroiderer's Guild members' challenge, the Guild has a Pinterest board of inspiration pictures. You can have a look here. Some lovely images even if you aren't entering this time!

If you watch Sky Arts Landscape and Portrait Artist of the Year you will have seen Moy Mackay and her felted landscape. We will ignore the reference to craft that crept in -it doesn't seem to apply to any other form of art! Anyway they are actively encouraging embroiderers to be involved. If you fancy having a go and possibly being on the telly, you can find information here.

A new venture

We now have a Facebook Page!
There's not a lot to see at the moment, but please head over there and follow/like us if you're on there too. It's the one with the map as the cover picture - some technical difficulties meant I started again and will delete the first attempt!  👍
There's a permanent link in the sidebar menu - click the picture .

In search of a picture.

One of my favourite places to visit when in need of a royalty free picture is The Graphics Fairy.
Here's a bit of Victorian machine embroidery as an example!

You can access the site herewhere you will find hundreds of images searchable by category as well as projects and tutorials. I've spent many happy hours browsing.
Happy hunting!

NEW QUILTING AT RHEGED CENTRE, PENRITH (UK EXHIBITION):

About the Event: This new exhibition will challenge the perceptions of quilt making, revealing a strong and vibrant contemporary craft form that is just as likely to be found hanging on a gallery wall or urban loft apartment as it is covering a bed in a rural farmhouse. Quilts by national and Cumbrian makers have been selected for the quality of the craftsmanship and design, the use of colour and an innovative approach. The unique story behind each piece will also be told in the exhibition, either through accompanying sketches and material revealing how each quilt came to be, or through the storytelling ability of the quilt itself. The Exhibition includes some quilts from the Hellbeck Collection, bykind permission of Charles Blackett-Ord and a special collaboration piece by Maddi Nicholson and some members of the Levens Quilters. There are also many workshops on embroidery, knitting, crochet, sashiko and needlefelt. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

April Meeting

Back by popular demand - a repeat of the mini workshops from earlier in the year. Two this month and two before the Summer break. Not everyone had the chance to try more than workshop last time so we thought we would run them again. Today Sue rolled out the Rolling Landscapes again and the shaving foam made another appearance for marbling fabric with Sally. The sketchbook project continued with drawing techniques led by Margaret Laycock and some just brought their own stitching to be working on.

It was great to see some new faces and we hope they enjoyed joining in with the activities on offer. Everyone is welcome to join us - you don't need to be Royal School of Needlework standard! There are plenty of people to help if you need it and we all have a wide range of interests and skills to share.

We were joined in the afternoon by Pauline Heywood, Chair of the Yorkshire and Humber Region Embroiderer's Guild. She brought a slide show for us on the history of the Embroiderer's Guild which was detailed and very interesting with lots of lovely photos from the Guild collection. The talk chronicled the Guild's history from it's beginning with sixteen members in 1906 when it was known as The Society of Certificated Embroideresses of the Royal School of Art Needlework - quite a mouthful! Thankfully we became the the Embroiderer's Guild after World War 1. The first catalogued piece, EG1, in the collection was a pair of 16th century doeskin kid gloves; the collection now holds around 5 000 significant pieces and 11 000 catalogued items which are now all curated at the Bucks County Museum Aylesbury. We are lucky to be able to access some of the collection through the Folios.  Pauline talked us through some highlights of the collection from the oldest Coptic embroidery 6th-10th century up to the latest pieces such as the beautiful Millennium Casket by Roy and Barbara Hirst. There are also items held from various corners of the globe. It brought back many memories of the City and Guilds research year for me! We were reminded of the breadth and quality of the Guild collection that we are so lucky to have.

Mending Nature

I was browsing textileartist.org again and came across Hannah Streefkerk and I love what she's doing with environmental art.
She uses embroidery and crochet to create artworks that are nature-oriented, inspired by elements such as water and land formations, trees, flowers and rocky landscapes. You can view more of her work here.
Hannah also has some gorgeous cross stitched pieces - I particularly love the embroidered leaves.
Many thanks to Hannah for allowing me to post her work here. Hope you enjoy it as much as me! Do check out her website by following the link.
